CHEMISTRY COURSE SYLLABUS
Tucker High School
School Year 2012-2013


 

Department Philosophy: Learn to love science and develop lab skills that will help the student with inquiry learning and data interpretation.

Course Description: During this course students will learn to define matter and classify it according to chemical and physical properties.  The historical and modern theories of the atom will be studied.  Students will classify atoms according to atomic structure and use that understanding to predict bonding using the periodic table.  The students will write formulas for compounds using their understanding of the periodic table and accepted rules of practice.  Students will describe chemical reactions by using balanced equations.  The behavior of solids, liquids,, and gases will be explored using the concept of the kinetic theory to explain the relationships involved.  Solutions and the properties related to solutions will be examined.  Students will explore dynamic equilibrium and predict changes using LeChatelier’s Principle.  Using the theory of equilibrium students will develop definitions and lab concepts of acids and bases.  Oxidation-reduction will be applied to real-life situations and energy interactions will be used to explain reaction spontaneity.  The factors affecting the rate of a reaction will be explored.

Course Prerequisites: Students must have completed and passed one full year of Algebra I (preferably with a B average or better).  Students must be enrolled in Algebra II or better.  Students must have completed Biology and most students should have completed Physical Science.  Students who have not taken Physical Science will be required to take Physics before graduation.

THE TUCK AND PULL POLICY WILL BE ENFORCED!!!


Make-up Policy: ***Requests for ALL make-up work must be initiated by the student.  Missed tests will be made-up after school on an agreed upon day, if the student has an excused absence for the test day.  

Re-do Policy:  Student must be present on the designated day and at the designated time to re-do a particular test.  Failure to keep an appointment time forfeits the chance to make-up a designated test.
